NEW ALBUM
Nubras Ensemble presents NUBRAS
A sonic journey through the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and emerging musical identities
On May 21, 2026, on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, promoted by UNESCO, NUBRAS, the first album of original compositions by Nubras Ensemble, has been released. Eight voices, eight stories, one evolving musical organism: the string quartet led by Giulia Anita Bari and Carla Mulas González on violins, Igor Legari on double bass, and Rachel Blueberger on cello engages in dialogue with the powerful voice of Roxana Ene—a Romanian-born Italian artist of Romani heritage—the alto saxophone and ney of multi-instrumentalist Giorgio Gadotti, the accordion of Nino Conte, and the percussion of Giovanni Lo Cascio, a longstanding figure in the Italian world music scene. As in nature, where biodiversity creates strength and resilience, Nubras builds a soundscape in which differences do not merely coexist but are transformed, becoming living, shared material. In an era marked by the resurgence of nationalism and rigid identities, the ensemble embraces complexity: a musical space where diversity coexists, engages in dialogue, and finds mutual recognition without hierarchies. It is no coincidence that the album is released on May 21, a symbolic date that invites reflection on how cultural diversity represents a shared heritage and a fundamental resource for peace and development. The album features profound references to Romani culture, including two special tributes: Homage to Kurtov, dedicated to the Bulgarian zurna virtuoso Samir Kurtov, and Dzelem Dzelem, an arrangement of the anthem of the Roma and Sinti peoples.

In 2023 Nubras won the Culture Moves Europe grant, allowing us to undertake an artistic residency in Bulgaria and record our debut album: Bulgarian Routes.
In this project, Nubras expands its ensemble, featuring the collaboration with Luca Cioffi on percussion (cajon, darbuka and frame drums) and three extraordinary Bulgarian musicians: Borislav Galabov, singer, composer and gadulka player in the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra; Diyana Vasileva, voice of the renowned Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices choir, and Kiril Belezhkov, professor of kaval flute and composer. Read their bios.
The project was performed live at the prestigious program La Stanza della Musica on RAI RADIO TRE, the Italian National Radio, at the H/Earthbeat Festival in Florence, and at Sala Biavati in Rome, showcasing its dynamic international appeal.
In 2024 we recorded our live album Live in Rome, in the famous Studio Coni Stella, which permanently hosts artistic projects of cultural and social significance. In this new work, you will listen to new songs some of them with the participation of two fantastic singers – Roxana Ene, a Romanian singer with Roma origins, naturalised Italian and Yasemin Sannino, an Italian-Turkish singer and actress – and two wonderful brass musicians, Giacomo Serino on trumpet and Leonardo Poggiali on baritone saxophone.
Recorded in April 2024 by Paolo Modugno

A special thanks to our friend Samah Boulmona with whom we had the pleasure of playing together in the early days of Nubras Ensemble and who taught us one of the songs. Thanks to Studio Coni Stella and to all our families and friends that suported us in this journey.
